Hopefully people who have educated themselves on Americana and/or International tattoo history will answer this and not just dumb idiots who get butterfly tramp stamps.

I figured, I'm American... I'm not a Nationalist, but even though American culture is mostly a mixture of influences from other cultures (like the Philippines?) we still some how used all of that to develop our own culture inspired by others. I mean... isn't that how the human race works, once we're exposed to other societies?

Sorry... I digressed from the main question. But I think I would be more interested in traditional American tattoos. Those are pretty much taken from military tattoos though, right? Such as swallows, anchors, feet tattoos, of Naval Officers...

I just feel like it wouldn't make sense to have a Papua New Guinea Style Tattoo (for example) if I have no connection to their society.

But to have it you are to be a maori etc, you are not supposed to get it if you are not maori as it is there culture and its not for anyone to copy that, they respect that and it would be dissing them if a white person got one.
