SHOO AWAY THAT STRESS! And start living freely

by Shelly Verma, Contributing
Writer

Do you come home everyday and feel like your body is just about to breakdown? At the end of the day, even after completing your day’s work, you tend to worry about what you have to do tomorrow or how much more work you can squeeze into 24 hours.

With many appointments, deadlines to meet, and demands of your time, it’s easy to forget what it means to take a break. To lessen burnout, get your mind to focus away from the routine stuff of everyday life.

"Tension is who you think you should be. Relaxation is who you are."
~Chinese Proverb

The most important remedy for stress , in the words of my favourite cartoon character Po, from Kung Fu Panda, is “Inner Peace.”

Firstly, you need to identify what is actually stressing you out. Is your work stressing you or are you really stressed out about your boss and how he behaves towards you? Or maybe you are really stressed that your job is not paying enough compared to your expenses. Maybe you are having issues in your personal relationships or you might be stressed about how your kids are performing in their academics. Just thinking about “work” or “family responsibilities” is enough to stress you out!

Ask yourself “ What is genuinely stressing me out?”

To put it in a simple way, it is “The Bad (or Negative) Thoughts!” that elevate stress. What we think and how we think and react to stressful situations is the most important thing when it comes to relieving stress. Try not to let the bad thoughts creep into your mind – refuse to let them into your mindset.

This can be a very very difficult thing to do, I know. Its easy to let the the negative thoughts consume you completely at times. But, at some point, you will have to shake yourself and say “ The ball is in my court! I Will Not let this overpower me and make me unhappy or tensed.”

If it doesn’t work the first time, wait a bit longer, try to distract yourself with something else. You will start to see the light at the end of the tunnel sooner or later.

Stress in any one area of your life will definitely affect everything else as well. It will take away your peace and contentment, at work and at home. If you are stressed at work, it will surely impact your personal life. You will find that you don’t feel like a part of your family’s life; but rather an like outsider who goes to work and comes home, not really having a connection or attachment with others.

The best ways to overcome stress are simple. The things we hear everyday but never apply to our lives are often the best, tried and trusted methods. I’ll tell you a few of my personal favorites.

Tuck away Technology

For most of us, our cellphones and laptops are more precious than our families. To truly unwind, it’s essential to put away the things that can keep you connected to your work commitments. Turn off your phone, so that you don’t get distracted by reminders when you’re trying to get some rest.

Spend time doing things you enjoy

Playing with kids makes us feel young and alive. Volunteering to help out the community and taking time out for social responsibilities, will be a good way to relax while doing your bit of good for the world in you live. You’ll surely feel better that you did something for someone else.

Turn Up the Music

Listening to your favorite music can actually increase your blood flow and improve your mood. Anything from the latest chart toppers to the oldies will help lighten the atmosphere and get your groove back. Do a small dance in your living room or cook up a storm in the kitchen. It’ll get your heart pumping, and you’ll feel active and good about yourself.

Scribble Down Your Thoughts

Does your mind run thoughts like credits at the end of a movie? If so, putting them on paper might help you to sort them out later and stop you from worrying that you may forget them later.

Nature is the best cure

When was the last time you went out for a walk just to get some fresh air? Or played outdoor with your pet? Nature and animals are a very calming influence, so along with the much needed exercise, you’ll be giving your mind some “OFF” time.

Now is the right time to let go of your tension. It’s time to finally take that hour or so, which you’ve been promising yourself for ages you’d take, to relax. There several relaxation activities you can perform without even having to leave the comforts of your home or office. Listen to music. Play with your kids or pet. Give yourself some extra shut-eye time. It doesn’t take much to stop stress from ruining your life.
